Soft Machine

An interactive single-file Opus 5.5 web experiment with its original prompt.

✦About this vibe

SOFT MACHINE (model SM-16, a fictional instrument) is a fully playable polyphonic synthesizer sculpted as a single slab of soft clay (#e4e8ee) floating on a matching clay page. Every control is raised out of or pressed into that one surface with paired #ffffff / #b8bec7 shadows, and the only colour anywhere is warm coral #ff6b5a, used for LEDs, knob value arcs, the tempo fill and the glowing oscilloscope trace. An OLED-like inset screen dominates the upper left: before any sound it shows a live, band-limited preview of the chosen waveform as it would leave the filter (Fourier series times a two-pole low-pass response, so resonance produces real ringing), then switches to the actual AnalyserNode signal once you play. Four rotary knobs (cutoff, resonance, attack, release), a four-way waveform selector, a play/tempo transport, a 16-step sequencer in four grouped trays and a two-octave soft keyboard complete the device. Engraved small-caps labels in muted slate, screws in the corners, a speaker grille and a power LED that flickers with the output level give it the feel of a real object.
