Create a loving, interactive web replica of the classic 1990s Encyclopaedia Britannica CD-ROM desktop encyclopedia — the Britannica CD / Britannica 97–2000 era multimedia reference suite that lived on millions of family computers. Let visitors step back into that world: boot up the encyclopedia, search and browse real articles, flip through media galleries and atlases, follow timelines, and rediscover the particular feeling of learning from a disc-era reference library on a period-accurate desktop.
Recreate the experience with close fidelity to how these CD-ROM encyclopedias looked, felt, and behaved: the splash or startup sequence and disc-era loading rhythm, the windowed application chrome with its menu bar, toolbars, and navigation buttons (back, forward, home, print), the search box with typedown suggestions and result lists ranked the old way, the article reader with serif body text, inline images and captions, cross-reference links that jump between entries, the table of contents / browse tree organized by subject, and the index lookup. Include the companion features that defined the era's multimedia encyclopedias: a world atlas with clickable maps and country entries, a timeline or year-by-year browser, a media gallery of images, diagrams, and maps, and the small delights — article of the day, random article, bookmarked favorites, and the quiet hum of a home office computer.
Fill it with genuine, substantial encyclopedia content rather than placeholder text: dozens of well-written articles across history, science, geography, art, and biography, each with the density, structure, and cross-linking of a real reference entry — lead summaries, section headings, fact boxes, related-article links, and captions. Articles, search results, browse trees, atlas entries, and timeline events should all resolve to real content inside the experience, so a visitor can wander from a search, through an article, along a cross-reference, into the atlas, and back again without hitting a dead end. Err toward breadth and depth in what you author yourself rather than thin stubs.
Preserve the period atmosphere throughout: the visual proportions, color palette, typography, bevels, iconography, cursors, dialogs, progress indicators, and window behaviors of a late-1990s reference application, including the secondary and edge states — empty search results, "article not found," the print-preview dialog, the about box crediting the disc edition, and the small status-bar messages that made the software feel inhabited. Everything should respond and animate the way that software did, with the same rhythm of clicks, loading, and discovery, while remaining pleasant and usable in a modern browser window.
Do not take shortcuts, substitute a generic retro-themed website, or stop at a recognizable shell. This skill imposes no token budget limit, so pursue the recreation down to the smallest meaningful interactions — the exact feel of navigation history, search refinement, cross-reference jumping, atlas zooming, and media browsing — and continue refining its content, states, motion, and atmosphere until it feels like the disc just spun up and the whole library is really there.
