Create a high-fidelity, three-dimensional audiobook shelf — a browsable wall of public domain literature that a visitor can look at, reach into, handle, and listen to. The shelf itself is the interface. Books stand in real space with real thickness, leaning slightly where a neighbor has been removed, catching light along their spines and gilt lettering. A visitor moves along the shelf, tilts their view, slides a volume out with a satisfying sense of weight, turns it to read the front board and the back, sets it down open, and hears it read aloud. Everything a person would want to do with a beautiful shelf of books should be possible here: browse, pull, inspect, open, listen, follow along, set aside, and reshelve.
Stock it generously with the well-known works that belong to everyone — a substantial, well-curated shelf of popular public domain titles such as Frankenstein, Dracula, Moby-Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Call of the Wild, Little Women, The Great Gatsby, Walden, Leaves of Grass, The Metamorphosis, Heart of Darkness, and their peers. Choose the titles and the shelf's depth of stock yourself, verifying that every work you include is genuinely free of copyright, but make the shelf feel like a real collection rather than a demo rack of six placeholders.
Each volume must wear its original cover — the first-edition or earliest-issue design that work was actually published in, recreated faithfully rather than replaced with a modern or generic substitute. Get the specifics right: the exact period typography and its letterforms, the color of the cloth or paper boards, the gilt or blind stamping, the engraved or lithographed cover art, the publisher's device, the proportion and trim size of that edition, the way the title sits on the spine, and the honest wear of a book that has existed for a century. The covers are the soul of this piece; treat their accuracy as a hard requirement, not decoration. A visitor who knows the 1897 Constable Dracula in its yellow boards, or Beardsley's design, or the first Moby-Dick, should recognize it instantly and find nothing wrong with it.
Make it an audiobook shelf in the full sense — listening is the point, not an afterthought icon. Opening a book should begin a narration of that work that the visitor can actually hear, with the transport controls a listener expects: play and pause, scrubbing, chapter or section navigation, speed, volume, resume where they left off, and a clear, elegant sense of where they are in the book. Let the text follow the voice, or the voice follow the text, so a reader can read along and know exactly which line is being spoken. Give playback its own presence in the space — the open book, ambient light shifting as time passes, a spine glowing on the shelf while its recording plays. Decide for yourself how the narration is produced and delivered so that it works reliably from a plain static folder; what matters is that a person can press play and be read to.
Carry the fidelity through everything a visitor touches. The lighting should behave like real light on cloth, leather, gilt, and paper, with shadow and contact between books and shelf. Motion should feel physical: the resistance of a volume tipping out, the settling of its neighbors, a page turn with real curl to it, a book closing with weight. Build the secondary states too — hover and focus feedback, the moment before a book leaves the shelf, an empty gap where one has been pulled, a search or sort that reorganizes the shelf with animated rearrangement, a detail view with edition notes and publication history, a reading position remembered on return, keyboard navigation, loading and error states, and what the shelf looks like when nothing is happening at all. Make it work and feel right on a phone and a tablet as well as a large screen, adapting the spatial interaction rather than degrading into a flat list, and keep it accessible to keyboard and screen reader users without hollowing out the experience.
Do not take shortcuts, substitute a cookie-cutter carousel of flat cover images, or stop once the shelf is merely recognizable. This skill imposes no token budget limit, so pursue the full depth of the piece: the accuracy of every original cover, the believability of the 3D handling, the quality of the narration experience, the small transitions and edge cases, and the atmosphere of a quiet room with a great shelf in it. Keep refining until it feels authored, complete, and genuinely worth exploring for its own sake.
